William was a 20 year old labourer who travelled unaccompanied on the Asia. In Ulster, Stringer was a rare name, mainly to be found in Armagh but with instances in the south east corner of Tyrone (Aghaloo, Clonfeacle, Errigal Keerogue) and Cavan.

Speer – Castlederg, Urney, Tyrone.
Margaret was an 8 year old child from Tyrone who travelled on the John Stamp who travelled with a 15 year old labourer called John Craig in the company of two Burns Females called Margaret, one aged 60 and married, the other 25 and single. Speers were rare in Tyrone and almost all came from Termanomongan, with spare ones from Castlederg (Urney) and Drumglass. Griffiths locates all of these three names in Castlederg and nowhere else.

Southwell
Thomas was a 21 year old farmer who travelled, possibly with Henry McFadden, on the Asia. There were no Southwells in Ulster according to Griffiths or Tithe Applotments and only the aristocratic and major land-owner Southwells in Leitrim and Limerick. However, Flaxgrowers lists one household from Kilglass in Roscommon.

John was an 18 year old labourer from Donegal who travelled on the John Stamp and who has acquired posthumous fame as a result of the Duffy’s Cut episode. Ruddy was an uncommon name in Donegal, confined to coastal pockets on the west coast, stretching from Malin, Burtonport and Ballshannon, This would all suggest the Ruddys made their living from the sea.

James was a 14 year old boy from Donegal who travelled on the John Stamp with his 8 year old sister Letitia, perhaps alone or perhaps chaperoned by Peggy McKendrick. There were no Risks in Ireland according to Griffiths but there were six households by that name in Donegal according to Tithe Applotment and these were in Fahan in Inishowen and around Raphoe. According to Flaxgrowers there was another household in Templemore in Donegal.

Bernard or Barney was a 21 year old weaver from Tyrone who travelled on the John Stamp with James Baird, John McAleer and James Donaghey. Strangely, there were few flaxgrowers called Rice in Tyrone and they came from Cappagh, Killyman and Errigal Keerogue where none of his companions came from.

Patchell – Knader, Kilbarron, Donegal
William and David Patchell were labourers from Donegal who travelled on the John Stamp and their names appear on the memorial at Duffy’s Cut. The Donegal Patchells came from Letterkenny and near Ballyshannon. There was also another Patchell clan from Derry who lived in Tamlaght Finlagan outside Limavady. The name was Huguenot in origin and they arrived in Ireland in the 1600s to escape persecution and mass murder in France at the instigation of the Catholic French monarch. They were not the only ones to be persecuted and unorthodox Catholics in France such as Jansenists and Valois met the same fate.

James was a 21 year old ‘farmer’ who travelled on the Asia surrounded by spinsters, some of whom he may have previously known – Elizabeth McKnight and the Russell sisters. The Nobles were very well spread out in Tyrone and Fermanagh.

Unusually, Anna was a 20 year old weaver and she travelled on the Asia, perhaps in the company of her fellow-weaver, Mathew Hood, and his siblings Samuel 24 and Catherine 20. Griffiths only recorded six Nicholls in Donegal and only three from the Laggan area adjoining Letterkenny near the Hoods. Tithe Applotment recorded a Nicholl from Stranorlar and Flaxgrowers recorded a Nickle (spelt the same way as in the ship manifest) from Rye in Inishowen.

Mary was an 18 year old spinster from Dysart near Lough Fea in County Tyrone who travelled in a group of six spinsters from Strabane on the Ontario. Neely is a name mostly associated with Tyrone but with a smattering in neighbouring counties.

Daniel was a 20 year old ‘farmer’ from Letterkenny in Donegal who travelled on the Ontario with nine other young males from Letterkenny. The Galway name is little to be found outside Galway but there was a pocket of that name in Leck, on the road out from Donegal Town to Letterkenny. Only James Nee of Drummahee in Leck gets mention in the Tithe Applotment for his very modest 6 acres of land and there were no flaxgrowers.

Arthur was a 22 year old ‘farmer’ from Tyrone who travelled on the Asia, perhaps in the company of Patrick McKeogh aged 26. The name McQuade is specific to Tyrone and localised to Dromore where it is very plentiful. The name McKeogh is even more of a waxwing in Ulster as it is a Tipperary name from Southern Ireland.

This name is normally translated from Irish as McPhelimy and is indigenous to Tyrone, not in Donegal where William is listed as hailing from. There are no examples in any of the usual sources – Griffiths, Tithe Applotment or Flaxgrowers List – of the name. There is one McPhillimy from Ballylennon outside Fahan in Donegal who had six acres. The waxwing McPhilemy, William, was a 44 year old farmer who travelled on the Prudence with five motherless small children – Elizabeth 11, Jane 8, Thomas 6, James 4 and Martha 2.

Margaret was a 26 year old spinster from Donegal who travelled on the Ontario with two spinster McDermott sisters – Mary 30 and Catherine 26. There were two McDermott households listed in the 1796 Flaxgrowers list for Ballybofey (actually Starnorlar which is the same thing) – the heads of household were Michael and Hugh There were five McMenamin households in the same area – the heads of household were Patrick, Peter, Hugh and John.

McKnight – Omagh
Elizabeth was a 20 year old spinster who travelled unaccompanied or with James Noble on the Asia. McKnight in Ulster is almost but not quite localised in the Gortin area of Tyrone in Ulster and there also it was to be found only in small numbers. There were isolated instances elsewhere as in Innishkeel in Donegal and Killeevan in Monaghan. McKnights did not appear in Flaxgrower lists.

McKenny – Cloghfin
Samuel was an 18 year old labourer from Tyrone who travelled unaccompanied on the John Stamp. The name was largely concentrated in Lissan and Drumragh just outside Omagh. His name does not appear on the Duffy Cut memorial.

McIlwaine – Ballyara, Killybegs Upper, Donegal
Alex was an 18 year old from Donegal of unspecified occupation who travelled perhaps unaccompanied or perhaps with John Long on the John Stamp. McIlwaines were mainly concentrated in Clondavaddog in the Fanad Peninsula but Alex may have been from All Saints. This would place him as a neighbour of John Long.

Raymond was a 23 year old labourer from Donegal who travelled with his sister Biddy 20 on the John Stamp. This is probably an incorrect spelling of McIlhenny who were to be found mainly in Convoy. Despite this error in transcription which the Watsons have not picked on jos name is on the West Chester memorial where they have him down as Bernard McIlheaney so they have him down wrong on both first name and surname.

McHugh*
Charles was a 26 year old blacksmith who travelled on the Asia with his 25 year old spinster sister. McHugh is a name that is almost exclusive to Tyrone, but only Donegal McHughs though few in number get listed in Tithe Applotment. Interestingly, the McHughs are listed as part of a cooperative of five, including a William Stewart, who had between them over sixty acres. This practise of cooperatives seems to have been the norm in this part of South Donegal. Another McHugh in Raymunterdoney seems to have been of an altogether poorer breed indeed.

McHenry
James was a 26 year old farmer from Knocken (wherever that is) who travelled unaccompanied on the Ontario. On the ship’s manifest he is listed as wedged amongst a whole squad of young men from Letterkenny. McHenry is a name that was very rare in Donegal, though not so elsewhere, and was localised to Moville and Letterkenny. It is also mentioned (perhaps mistakenly) on the Flaxgrowers List for Raymoghy.

Brian was a 20 year old labourer from Donegal who travelled with his spinster sister Catherine 22 on the John Stamp. If the name is correct, it is very specific to Clonleigh and only one household of that name appears for Donegal in Griffiths. None appear in Tithe Applotments or Flaxgrowers. He would be a definite target for the Watsons who would seek to place him at Duffys Cut where he would be murdered or die of cholera. He is not on the memorial and the question also would have to be asked – would he abandon his sister immediately after arrival and would she not be looking for him if he disappeared?

McGonigle – Inishowen, Donegal
Nancy was a 26 year old spinster from Tyrone who travelled with two small McLaughlin children on the John Stamp, Samuel 9 and Margaret 6. McGonigles mainly came from Leckpatrick, with a lesser scattering in Urney and Donaghedy. McLaughlins though plentiful in adjoining counties were scarce in Tyrone, being localised to Clogherny. This all means that the McGonigles and McLaughlins were unlikely to be neighbours.

Eliza was a 24 year old spinster from Donegal who travelled alongside but may only have fallen in with a group from Donegal who included William Patchell, the Doaks, William Boyle and Samuel Bell. The spelling of her name, with the h inserted, is specific to a part of Donegal just north of Letterkenny (Clondahorky, Kilmacrennan and Killygarvan) but there were smatterings elsewhere such as Kilbarron.

Samuel was a 14 year old ‘farmer’ from Donegal who travelled on the Prudence in the company of the Ewing sisters and Francis Davis. The Kyles of Donegal, though not numerous, were scattered throughout the country with no concentration anywhere. According to Griffiths, the Ewing sisters did not come from the same townland as Samuel and probably took pity on him. Tithe Applotment tells a very different story. There was quite a concentration of Kyles in Aughnish, just outside Letterkenny, on the way to Ramelton. There was Davis in Aughnish and the Ewings were in Letterkenny. They might all have known each other beforehand.

Other young Hoods from Donegal travelled on the Asia and were possibly related – Matthew (26), Sam (24) and Catherine (20). The surname was relatively rare in Donegal though very plentiful in other parts of Ulster. The Hood from Letterkenny owned only two acres of land so Francis was not really a farmer.

Neither were their plots of land of any great size, usually no more than 12 acres.

The household did not appear in either the Tithe Applotment or Flax Grower Lists so Connell was unlikely to be a farmer, more of a farm labourer.

Charles was a 20 year old ‘farmer’ from Ballybofey in Donegal who travelled on the Ontario with Peter Neilson, John McGowan, Daniel McBride, Peter Griffin and Patrick Carlan – all from Ballybofey. Several of these names are more prevalent in Clondavaddock but all were to be found in or around Urney, near Ballybofey, in Donegal. Although Gibbons apppears in Ballbofey in the Tithe Applotment the actual size of the plot would approximate more to an allotment rather than a smallholding, therefore ‘farmer’ would be an exaggeration. His associate Griffin might qualify better as his spread stretched to 25 acres.

John Carland may have been Garland as ships’ manifests were often hard to decipher. Either way, he was a 25 year old painter whp travelled on the Asia. If he truly was Carland, he most likely came from Clonleigh in Donegal and definitely not from Tyrone or Derry. The name Carland appears on the Tithe Applotment for Donegal but not for Tyrone. On balance, Carland is probably correct.

James was a 20 year old farmer from Stranorlar in Donegal who was one of a shipload of farmers on the Ontario. The sheer size of the contingent raises the possibility that it was some kind of cooperative. The Tithe Applotment lists one Ferguson from Corleckey in Stranorlar, Andrew, who was to pay a tithe of almost ten shillings. Using another example which charged £1 for about 50 acres of mountain or £1 for 8 acres of pasture or £1 for a quarter-acre of arable land, this would suggest the Ferguson holding would sustain only one farmer, hence the need for emigration.

These particular Ewings on the John Stamp were of a more common variety and they don’t merit a mention even in the Tithe Applotment books. The Flax Growers List places them almost excusively in the Inishowen peninsula in east Donegal.

William was a 15 year old labourer from Donegal who travelled on the John Stamp with two other juveniles, the Risks aged 14 (James) and 8 (Letitia), as well as Peggy McKendrick (18), all from Donegal. How they came to travel together, all being so young, is a mystery to be resolved. Risks are placed by Tithe Applotment in Fahan and Clonleigh in Donegal, Elliotts and McKendrick are placed in Leck or Inishowen. So how did they all meet up together? No other Risks are recorded before or after, apart from one single lady twenty years later, as having emigrated to US from Ireland. William, despite his very young age, might have ended up as easy pickings for Philip Duffy at the Cut.

Alexander was a 20 year old farmer who travelled on the Ontario from either the Laggan or Inishowen in Donegal. If from Inishowen, he came from Ballyderowen on the Burnfoot to Muff road. Tithe Applotment also places Elders in Inishowen but further inland in Carndonagh and Malin. However, he may have come from the Laggan, outside Letterkenny, as he was part of the McClay/Stewart group on the boat. Modern-day Elders from Donegal and Derry tend to be Presbyterians.

Edward Edgar was a 24 year old ‘farmer’ who travelled, possibly accompanied by F McConaghy, on the Asia. Most likely he came from the East or West of the Province, Antrim or Armagh. However, Tithe Applotment does place Edgars in Fahan in County Donegal.

Tithe Applotment places the name in the same remote far west part of Donegal – Tullaghobegley and Clondahorky – where John Ruddy came from. Peter Diermott was a 26 year old single shoemaker and he travelled unaccompanied on the Asia. If the spelling of the name is correct he came from Inch but the spelling Dermott which is located around Moville is much more common. Either way the name Diermott was from the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal but Tithe Applotment places the name Dermott in Kilmacrennan in Donegal. The Spinning Wheel Entitlement Liat places more Dermotts in Tullyaughnish and other variations of the spelling – Dyermond, Dyermott, Dyormott and Dyormond – in Desertegney and around Raphoe.

Devaney
James Devaney was a 26 year old labourer from Tyrone who travelled unaccompanied on the John Stamp. According to the Watsons, James was either murdered or died of cholera at Duffys Cut and his name is on a memorial in West Chester for the Disappeared from that reported foul play. The puzzle is how can the Watsons be so definite, especially in a case such as this where spellings of the name are so varied. If James was truly Devaney, that is a rare spelling and there is no instance of this name in Griffiths nor in Tithe Applotment. It appears once in the Flaxgrowers list where it is reported in Killyman in the furthest SE corner of Tyrone County. If one of the other spellings, the name is widely dispersed throughout the County.

James Cully is listed on the John Stamp as a 27 year old labourer from Tyrone. This poses a puzzle as there is no trace of anyone of that surname in the whole of the North West of Ulster. This name draws a blank apart from a mention in Tithe Applotment for a Cully from Fahan in Donegal.

Culbertson*
John Culbertson was a 20 year old weaver who travelled with his 21 year old sister on the Asia. Apart from Sligo, the name was only to be found in Uster and mostly in Clogherny or Donacavey in Tyrone. Less likely places were Stranorlar in Donegal or Faughanvale in Derry. Culbertsons do get mention in Tithe Applotment for Killymard just outside Donegal Town.

Creighton
John Creighton was a 23 year old labourer who travelled on the John Stamp. According to the Watsons, John was most likely murdered or died of cholera at Duffys Cut. He was listed on the manifest as being from Donegal. If so, he was indeed a waxwing as the name was very rare in Donegal, mostly stemming from Derry and Tyrone. In Donegal, it was only to be found just north of Donegal Town (Killymard and Inver). Unusually also for the waxwings, the Creightons were not flaxgrowers, nor did they have a business, nor did they own land. One can only assume that they worked as servants and there were no Creightons in Tithe Applotment.

Crawford
Noel Crawford was a 22 year old labourer from Tyrone who travelled on the Prudence. Quite likely unrelated as it was a common name, a Crawford family also left from Derry within a few weeks – a 50 year old father with a 26 year old spinster daughter who had two small children with her. A married 20 year old mother by the name of Crawford also left on the John Stamp with two small children. Crawfords mostly came from Donacavey, with a smaller cluster of them around Omagh (Drumragh and Donacavey). There are no Crawfords from Tyrone in Tithe Applotment.

John Craig was a 15 year old labourer who travelled on the John Stamp with two other Craigs, a thirty year old weaver and a sixty year old widow. He is listed as from Tyrone which would place him probably in the North West of the county around Ardstraw. A few Craigs from Urney get mention in Tithe Applotment.

Cowan – Greenan, Faughanvale, Derry
William Cowan was a 22 year old labourer from Derry, most likely from Faughanvale. He travelled on the Prudence and he may well have pre-arranged or teamed up with a squad of other young labourers from Derry who also were on the Prudence and whose surnames were to be found in Faughanvale – Alex Ewing (20), Stewart Davis (22), William Cole (22) and John Gilfillen (25). They would have made rich pickings for Philip Duffy.

Eileen has unearthed much material on this waxwing from Ancestry.
William Cook was a 32 year old ‘farmer’ from Donegal who travelled on the Asia with his 34 year old spinster sister and three young children under the age of 5, one being a babe in arms. The name Cook gets mention in Tithe Applotment for Moville and Fahan in Donegal.

Like Caldwell, this person should probably not be on this list as the surname was very plentiful over the whole of Ireland and only half of that name lived in Ulster. Joseph Cochrane was a 25 year old ‘farmer’ who travelled on the Asia and inadequate details were given on the manifest, as with all passengers on that ship.

Although Mary Childs, a 22 year old unaccompanied spinster on the John Stamp, is listed as being from Derry, there is no independent trace of that name in that county. The name was rare and it was to be found only in and around Belfast.

Carrigan
Nancy was a 26 year old spinster, no occupation given, who travelled unaccompanied on the Ontario. The manifest, though hard to decipher, appears to state that Nancy came from Newtownlimavady but neither Griffiths nor the Flaxgrower List place Carrigans or even Kerrigans there. Both names can be found elsewhere in County Derry but not in Limavady.

Carlin – Strabane, Camus, Tyrone
There are variations of spelling and each has its own parish of origin in Donegal. Carlin comes from Templemore in Inishowen; Carlon comes from Moville in Inishowen; and Carland (the commonest version) comes from Clonleigh. Patrick Carlin, a 22 year old farmer, came from none of these and came from Ballbofey in the opposite end of the county on board the Ontario and he was unaccompanied. The name Carlin in Donegal gets plentiful mention in Tithe Applotment.

James Caldwell should probably not be on this list as he does not qualify to be a waxwing. The name Caldwell is widespread throughout Derry (mainly Clondermot), Donegal (mainly Raphoe) and Tyrone (mainly Clogher). He can be kept on for now but is likely to be removed.

Mr Brigham (no first name recorded) was a 21 year old clerk from Derry who travelled unaccompanied on the Ontario. Brigham is an uncommon name with some presence around Donegal Town and in Ardstraw in County Tyrone but there is only one instance of the name in Derry which was in the Waterside (Clondermot) area.

The name is more common in Donegal and interestingly is not listed in Griffiths fifteen years later for Derry. Earlier, it could be found according to the Flaxgrowers List in Faughanvale as well as in Templemore which was more urbanised.

John Boal was a 24 year old landless ‘farmer’ who travelled unaccompanied on the Ontario from Letterkenny. The surname is rare and is specific in origin to Raphoe and Donaghmore just outside Letterkenny in County Donegal. One Boal, with 80 acres in Letterkenny, appears in Tithe Applotment.

Daniel was a 36 year old carpenter who travelled on the Asia with his 30 year old spinster sister, accompanied by three children under the age of five. The name Blackwell was quite prevalent in the South of Ireland around and inlands of Limerick but only existed in Ulster in a small pocket in North Belfast.

Birney was an unusual name in Ireland almost exclusive to Ulster. Charles was almost 40 when he emigrated and he was unaccompanied. Birneys mostly came from Clogher in County Tyrone. Only three Tyrone families called Birney appear in Tithe Applotment and they were all from Urney.

Barton was not a common name in Ireland and three-quarters of them were from Ulster. James’s county of origin is not listed but most likely it was Tyrone or Derry. If Tyrone, it was most likely Ardstraw or Aghaloo; if Derry, it was Tamlaght Finlagan.

Barr – Lurganaglare
This is a very common name in Ulster and very little found in any other part of Ireland. James Barr was a ‘farmer’ from Tyrone, most likely from Urney or Clogherny, who travelled on the Prudence. Two spinsters with young children also named Barr travelled on the Asia. Only three Tyrone families called Barr appear in Tithe Applotment and they were all from Urney.

Ballantine (Balentine)
This name was to be found only in Tyrone and Donegal. In Archy’s case, he was a stonemason from Tyrone, most likely from Bodoney, otherwise from Aghaloo or Camus. A single and unrelated Balentine from Donegal travelled on the Prudence and the rest of Archy’s family travelled with Archy on the John Stamp. The Ballantines had too little land to merit a mention in the Tithe Applotment books.

Baird – Mullagharn, Drumragh, Tyrone
This is a very common name in Ulster and rare in other parts of Ireland. James Baird, a labourer off the John Stamp, came from Tyrone and most likely came from Donaghedy parish. If not, he would have come from an adjoining parish – Donacavey, Ardstraw or Urney. There are Bairds in Tithe Applotment and they all came from Urney. A Baird family emigrated on the Asia a month before but there is nothing to say that there was any connection.

Allison (Alleson)
Catherine was on the John Stamp and she is listed as being from Donegal. According to the Lists, there were 25 families of that name in Donegal in 1796 and the parishes were all in Raphoe Barony – Clonleigh, Leck, Rye, Taughboyne, Tully and Donaghmore. This sounds a lot but these places are all within a narrow radius of each other. She was not accompanied by any relatives. There were several land-owning Allison families in Donegal so it is possible Catherine had some independent means to see her through. There are a good number of Allison families from that part of Donegal listed in the Tithe Applotment Books.

There were 73 households of the name listed in Griffiths. Cross-matched against the Flaxgrowers List of 1796, there is an 80% probability that this Robert Arthur was from Tyrone or Derry. If from Tyrone, the townland was likely to be Cappagh, Ardstraw or Drumragh. If from Derry, it was likely to be Aghanloo or Dungiven. There were no accompanying relatives on any ship from Derry in 1832 but this does not rule out an earlier or later emigration.
